Very little is known about eigthteenth century New Spain poetry. The discovery of the manuscript Poemas varios (ca. 1718) by Fray Juan Antonio de Segura sheds new light on the study of this period in Colonial Literature. This volume contains manifestations of genres (such as the burlesque mythological fable and the burlesque poetic portrait) which presumably had not been cultivated in New Spain. For the first time, we are presented with examples of works by various poets who, hitherto, had been virtually unknown (José Villerías, Juan José Gutiérrez and Juan Antonio de Segura, among others).
