The present study analyses Saint Augustine’s impact on the formation of school education based on the concept of seven general subjects called septem artes liberales which were taken from the late antiquity. It reflects Augustine’s less known writings on two disciplines of trivium – grammar and dialectics and one discipline of quadrivium – music. In grammar and dialectics, the study examines the authenticity of preserved treatises, whose authorship has been disputed for centuries. Based on Augustine’s work Retractationes, the study tries to mention common starting points and parallels with well-known works. De musica is the only one from presented works that is clearly attributed to Augustine. The aim of this study is to point out Augustine’s influence and authority on the formation of education at the turn of antiquity and mediation of this tradition for Middle Ages.
