The article studies the phenomenon of image of the city in terms of the constructivist paradigm in sociology – namely, the concept of social construction of reality P. Berger and T. Luckman. The situation leveling sociological theory in the development of a conceptual model of the phenomenon of the image of the city, through the study of this phenomenon comes down to economics, and the image of the city is treated unilaterally, particularly from the standpoint of marketing communications. The need for a theoretical study of the image of the city turning towards the same sociological theory explains the changes in the socio-cultural specifics of the actual situation: the changing nature of social relations, the emergence of «consumer society», a significant enhancement of the role of information and communication in all social processes and phenomena. The concept of social construction of reality allows us to consider the image of the city in its relationship with everyday communication processes going on in the city, and the result of which he is, and to investigate the specific design of this phenomenon by using a phased process of constructing reality and its elements in general (habitualization, typing, institutionalization and legitimation), which as a result will determine the image of the city as iconic and symbolic construct.
