This study aims to describe the criteria used by Brazilian researchers in Information Science and Mathematics, Probability and Statistics for the decision to publish a scientific article. First, a list of postgraduate programs evaluated in the 2013-2016 was used, postgraduate programs in the field of Information Science and the field of Mathematics, Probability and Statistics were randomly selected, and the set of data retrieved was information from researchers linked to those programs. Then, a survey containing questions regarding the criteria taken into account for the decision to publish the article and about potential indicators considered necessary for the evaluations regarding the quality of the journals was sent to the researchers. The results showed that the Journal Impact Factor was one of the criteria mentioned by researchers of both fields, but it was not the most mentioned, being Qualis-periodic system, Focus or Scope and Average response time of the evaluation. It is suggested that the Journal Impact Factor is not the prior criterion among the items mentioned by researchers of both scientific areas.
