Mutualism and lottery in imperial Rio de Janeiro (1850-1889)

The article presents an overview of the mutual aid associations that were organized in the city of Rio de Janeiro between 1850 and 1880 in order to buy lottery tickets. It uses as sources the processes of creation or adaptation of the statutes sent to the Conselho de Estado for consideration. It aims to more accurately measure the associative experience between ex-slaves and free workers, nationals and immigrants, residing at the Court in the 19th century. Highlighting the Sociedade Lotérica Beneficente dos Calábrias, which defined a space for the construction and reproduction of horizontal solidarity bonds, permeated by the feeling of ethnic identity and nationality.
