The total number and reproduction rate of the microbial plankton and the numbers of organotrophs were determined. within organic matter production and destruction investigation as a component of the ecological monitoring of the Srebarna Lake since 2001. The microbiological pattern of the central open water body was spatially uniform. The free water was microbiologically characterized as mesotrophic. The microbial plankton was physiologically active and potent for final mineralization of the organic matter in all seasons. No situation was registered during the whole period of observation in which the microbial population was driven out of thenormal values interval.
