Drawing on various publications relating to La Fosse and the papers presented at the conference “Charles de La Fosse and the Arts in France around 1700” held on the 18 and 19 May 2015 at the Château de Versailles, this article first discusses the difficulty in describing and naming the major stylistic changes that occurred between 1680 and 1720. It then highlights the emergence in France of a new place for painting, on the ceiling, for which there were many visual solutions, and which led the artist to establish a deeper relationship with the client, as was the case with La Fosse. Finally, the article emphasizes the creation of a new object in France at the end of the seventeenth century, the painting, which was shown to its best advantage and became autonomous in the interiors, both because it is the site of painterly quotations (and thus an awareness of a story) and because it is a base for knowledgable discourse and society conversation.
