INFECTION CAUSED BY ESCHERICHIA COLI O157:H7 – CASE REPORT

Background. Escherichia coli O157:H7 causes hemorrhagic colitis and is associated with serious complications, which include hemolytic uremic syndrome, thrombocytopenic purpura, and death.Patient and methods. A 3-years old girl with infection by Escherichia coli O157:H7 presented with hemorrhagic colitis, bicytopenia and proteinuria with microhematuria. Diarrhoea subsided in a few days without specific therapy, complications subsided during treatment with aminoglycoside antibiotic.Conclusions. Infection by Escherichia coli O157:H7 must be recognised in time especialy in young children and in the olderly. In these groups this infection often leads to serious complications, even death.
