Solitary pulmonary nodule as a form of presentation of a benign metastasizing leiomyoma

Abstract

Introduction: Leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle tumor that can occur in different locations; the most common is in the uterus. Lung location is very rare, and they are usually secondary to a primary tumor mainly located in the uterus. Their clinical picture varies from asymptomatic and incidental findings by imaging; even those with the most varied symptoms. They are usually bilateral and multiple, rarely presenting as single solid masses. Objective: To present a clinical case of a solitary pulmonary nodule as a presentation of a pulmonary leiomyoma. Clinical case: A 51-year-old female patient with a gynecological-obstetric history of a hysterectomy 8 years ago, who presented due to shortness of breath and chest pain. An imaging study revealed a unilateral solid mass in the right lung. Surgical intervention, type upper right pulmonary lobectomy, was decided. The histological study raised the diagnosis of a benign metastatic pulmonary leiomyoma, which was corroborated with immunohistochemical markers. Conclusions: Pulmonary leiomyoma is a rare clinical entity and constitutes a clinical, histological and imaging challenge.
