無The University of Nevada-Reno with 9,100 students has microcomputers valued at $2.8 million which are used in 275 different courses by students who log over 368,000 hours of use per academic year. In the first year of implementation of an on campus microcomputer maintenance and repair policy, 1985-86, the University initially provided maintenance with a 5% and later 6% assessment of the purchase price of the equipment. This policy was evaluated at the end of six months and again at the closure of one year. Work orders numbered approximately 125 per month or a total of 1500 job requests during the first year of operation, with 63% of all repair work provided on campus. Details on the kinds of repairs and consultations requested are indicated for this time period. Consideration is given to generalized problems and concerns resulting from the execution of an institutional policy for microcomputer maintenance and the charges arising from this procedure.
