A study of the European box office in the years 1960-1970 highlights what could be called a "missed opportunity" in French cinemas with films devoted to Karl May's hero Winnetou: multiple reasons could explain the failure of these the films, which were produced by Horst Wendlandt on behalf of his production company Rialto Film, a company specializing in both German and French—even international—co-productions.
