The Cambridge Analytica “scandal” made the mechanisms and consequences of personal data collection visible. We now know that Internet users can be targeted not only for advertising but also for political purposes, by exposing them to personalized political messages during election periods. The author asks if the revelations fueled a discussion, in the media, of personal data surveillance and the economic model of GAFAs. Using pragmatist and discursive approaches, the author examines how the event was reported based on a corpus of 62 articles published in Le Monde.
