The mediating role of safety motivation in relationship between of safety management practices and unsafe behaviors

Abstract: Background and aims: The present study tests a model of the relationship between safety management practices with unsafe behaviors and with of mediation of safety motivation. Methods: Research design was correlation through structural equation modeling (SEM) and the sample consisted of 265 employees of an industrial company who were selected by stratified random sampling method. Participants of this study completed safety management practices Scale, safety motivation scale and unsafe behaviors questionnaire. Reliability and validity all of questionnaires were accepted. Structural equation modeling (SEM) through AMOS-21 and SPSS-19 software packages was used for data analysis. In addition, Preacher and Hayes’ SPSS Macro program was used for testing mediation. Results: The results showed that the proposed model fit the data properly. Safety management practices have direct effect on unsafe behaviors and safety motivation (p<0.0001). Also the mediating effect of safety motivation in relationship between safety management practices and unsafe behaviors was confirmed (p<0.0001). Conclusion: Therefore, organizations can by increasing the safety management practices and also training to employees and supervisors to reinforce the safety motivation, reduce unsafe behaviors and followed to reduce occupational accidents.
