Attitude of Russians to sanctions: sociological analysis

Background. The introduction of sanctions against Russia by Western countries, and in particular their significant increase after 2022, has led to a number of both positive and negative consequences in the economy, politics, and culture. They also had an impact on life of Russians and became a test of strength of our fellow citizens, their loyalty, solidarity, and patriotism. The purpose of the study is sociological analysis of Russians’ attitude to introduction of sanctions and their impact on everyday life. Materials and methods. The study of ideas of Russians and youth about sanctions, their impact on level and quality of life of various social groups is based on secondary analysis of data from all-Russian and regional studies, the results of authors’ research conducted among students in Penza in 2024. Results. Analysis of the concept “sanctionsˮ was carried out, key areas of study of sanctions within the framework of sociological approach were identified. Based on all- Russian materials and authors’ research, the understanding of sanctions policy fundamentals, attitude of Russians and youth to imposed anti-Russian sanctions in various areas, especially those related to their daily life and satisfaction of basic needs, are analyzed. Conclusions. In 2014, there was a low level of concern among Russians regarding sanctions and their impact on everyday life. The Russians managed to overcome the difficulties that arose. After 2022, it is widely believed among half of Russians that sanctions do not have a significant impact on their lives. Despite the fact that there are fewer such positions in group of young people, they also believe that sanctions did not greatly affect their financial situation and usual way of life. Only a tenth of Russians and youth are worried about the withdrawal of some foreign brands and companies from the Russian market.
