In this article, we examine how Spanish nurses obtaines that their activities were not seen only as a work of philanthropy, but were instead considered as an important practice during armed conflicts. For this reason, it first analyzes the situation of Spanish nurses towards the end of the nineteenth century; and then it will investigate the causes that have contributed to the creation of nursing schools in Spain: an indispensable step towards the professionalisation. The Monarchy and the Red Cross [Cruz Roja] were the most important institutions that contributed to the process of converting the employment of nurses in a real profession.
