The French-German border has been strongly modified by the process of European integration, a major functional transformation which implies a dramatic increase of cross-border interaction between people. The purpose of this paper is to study the spatial effects of the opening of the border at a regional scale (East of France): the diffusion process in space of the flows of cross-border commuters to Germany will be analysed from 1960’s to 1990’s. We will show how the diminution of the border’s barrier effects changes its spatial forms : today, the border is more a zone than a line.
