This article is devoted to the study of the English nicknames of hockey players from the point of view of their semantic features. Hockey has become a universal means of communication between people of different mentalities and temperaments. In many countries, especially in Russia, Canada, America, hockey is a part of a national idea, national identity. The material for the study was 571 units, compiled by the method of continuous scanning of the English - Russian encyclopedic dictionary of ice hockey terminology and the official website of the NHL. Having analyzed the main existing classifications, based on the classifications of leading researchers - A.V. Superanskaya and Z. P. Nikulina, taking into account the collected actual material, semantic groups of hockey players' nicknames were distinguished.
