This essay revisits the argument, purposes, and steps that led to the publication of my book on the formation of Brazil in the South Atlantic, also taking stock of its impact and reception over the last 20 years. Brazilian historiography is generally linked to a territorial paradigm that could be summarized in a false axiom: the colonial history of Brazil unfolds only in the colonial territory of Brazil. My studies in France, when the Annales were still promoting the global history of Braudel and his disciples, helped me to escape this bias at a time when more comprehensive studies on the transatlantic slave trade were published.
