Abstract
In this paper, three-level hierarchical regression models (the first level represents the students; the secondlevel, the classrooms; and the thirdlevel, the schools) are produced toexplain levels of proficiency achievedin the Portuguese language assessmentof the PROEB/SIMAVE-2002 the Mi-nas Gerais State Programme for theAssessment of Elementary Education,by students in the 4th year ofelementary school. Results show thatthere is large variability explained byclassroom differences, reasonablevariability explained by school differences, and enormous variabilityexplained by student differences. Whenthe variables studied are introduced inthe models, a substantial portion of thetotal variability is explained.
