New materials on the history of study of archaeological sites of the Middle Ages and Modern times in Naberezhnye Chelny are presented in the article. A reference to primary field sources and other materials of previous studies, combined with new data, made it possible to confirm the previously made conclusion about the Bulgar-Tatar presence quite representative by the standards of the Bulgar periphery on the territory and surroundings of the modern city of Naberezhnye Chelny. The available materials illustrate the continuation of the development of the Kama tributaries area that began in the pre-Mongol period in the subsequent Golden Horde period. The usual settling at the dominant natural heights, the sites of the headlands fits into the context of the Kama communication, the control of one of its sections. Settlements appeared near fortifications, infrastructure was formed. The dominance of the role of the natural factor in antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Modern times caused continuity in the choice of places to live, including the original settlements, especially fortified ones. To a certain extent, the use of specific areas, corresponding to their functional essence, was preserved. The territory, the dynamics of the formation of the cultural layer in the Middle Ages and Modern times have not yet been determined. Strongly pronounced materials of the XVII century have not been revealed in the studied sites, including the original location of Chelny Pochinok, Berezhnaya Sloboda, known from written sources, have not been identified. The latter is important to note in order to correctly compare the representation of materials of Modern and Medieval periods. It is well known that the latter are initially concentrated less compared to the later ones, are preserved worse and more difficult to identify, etc.
