Characterization of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in children

Through various channels come from primary care, patients with lower gastrointestinal bleeding episodes, so, it is imposed the need for exploration of colon looking for the cause that provokes the episodes and to apply the appropriate therapeutic. In order to characterize clinical, etiological and histologically the causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding in children a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in a population comprised 152 patients attended in the Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy Service of "José Luis Miranda" University Pediatric Hospital in Santa Clara from January 2013 to December 2014. Predominating masculine sex and the age group of five to eight years; rectal bleeding as clinical presentation was made in 117 patients and hematochezia in 31; endoscopically, there were no alterations in 44 patients and polyps were found in 61 children- 33 hamartomatous, 16 youthful 10 inflammatory and two adenomatosos- and it was diagnosed colon adenocarcinoma in one case; ulcerative colitis in two children; Frequently polypoid lesions were in the rectum and there were no complications in procedures performed.
