Background: Zinc is a crucial trace element that plays a vital role in various physiological functions, including immune function, growth, and reproduction in livestock. Zinc deficiency can lead to various health problems in livestock, such as decreased growth rates, impaired reproductive performance, and increased susceptibility to diseases. In contrast, supplementing livestock diets with zinc can promote health and enhance microbiome balance, leading to improved animal welfare and productivity. Objectives: This review seeks to provide valuable information for researchers, veterinarians, and livestock producers on the effects of dietary zinc supplementation. Current knowledge on the importance of dietary zinc for livestock and microbiome health as well as mechanistic insights are discussed.
