Anything but the Subject, Venice Architecture Biennale 2023

Abstract

I present a critical review of the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. Init, I discuss the problematic inclusion of Architecture in a Fine Art context, and also the eccentric prioritising of sociological and environmental concerns over and above the business of architecture. This is not to say that these latter are of great importance, but it seems that the Architecture Biennale is not confronting the humdrum and hyper-commercial project which concerns so many architects today. I finally lament the lack of imaginative technology to make the experience of architecture more vivid. This will probably be my last review of the Architecture Biennale.
