Purpose. The article is devoted to the consideration of various forms of the Latin language widespread in Western Europe in the IV–X centuries. Method or methodology of the work. To solve these tasks the historical method was used with the aim of establishing types of linguistic situations and conditions and their temporal correlation in the countries of Western Europe as well as the comparative-historical based on cultural-historical interpretation and identification of the types of dialects and the comparative one that involves systematization of the emerging linguistic situations and conditions in the territory of the studied habitats in this period. Results. The analysis of various forms of Latin, existing in Western Europe until Modern Period, allows us to make certain conclusions on the process of transformation of one language into another as an extremely complex phenomenon, fed by various sources, each of them being marked by its own peculiarities of development. The study of the history of the Latin language as the most important source of Romanic languages in the light of these developments represents a very important phenomenon, because it can help the researcher approach understanding of the origins of the Romanic languages and sustainability of Latin after the collapse of the Roman Empire. Practical implications. The materials and conclusions of the study can be used in theoretical courses in Romanic Philology, General linguistics, in the course of the Latin language.
