The impact of disposing of olive mill wastewater in concrete mixes
Abstract
Environmental sustainability is considered an essential aspect of the modern world. Researchers are making significant efforts to minimize the environmental impact of waste. This research uses olive mill wastewater (OMWW) in concrete mixes to replace water, enhance concrete properties, and dispose of the OMWW. Several concrete mixes containing different W/c ratios, water content, and OMWW replacement levels were prepared. Adding OMWW to a concrete mix increases its slump up to 430% while improving the compressive strength of concrete by an average of 5%. Additionally, the use of OMWW in concrete mixes did not affect the long-term strength of concrete. Finally, the mixed water can be safely used in concrete mixes for up to a 12% replacement ratio without exceeding the ASTM limit. At this limit, a 28% to 178% increase in the slump of the concrete mix was reported without affecting its strength.
