A randomized clinical trial on Balya and Brimhana effect of concentrated juices of Madhooka pushpa (Flowers of Madhuca indica J.F. Gmel)

Introduction: In present scenario of food crisis, there is a need to explore new plants which can serve nutrition. Methods: Randomized clinical trial was designed; to revalidate efficacy of Madhooka pushpa, quoted Balya-Brimhana by Madanpala-Bhavaprakasha-Priyanighantu; on 90 healthy volunteers (3 groups of 30each). Group A and B were administered Drug D and I 5 g BD with normal water empty stomach for 90 days. Group C was on normal routine diet without any intervention. Subjective and objective parameters analyzed using “Wilcoxon signed rank test,” “KruskalWallis test with posttest” and “Student's paired t-test,” “ANNOVA” respectively. Results: There was significant improvement in symptoms of overall sarata, Samhanana, Pramana, Satmya, Satva, Aharasakti, Vyayamasakti with 30.92%, 9.09%, 3.75%, 10.59%, 27.46%, 20.31%, 42.73% improvement in Group A and 28.28%, 7.88%, 3.10%, 8.94%, 25.07%, 16.67%, 21.875% improvement in Group B; significant increase in weight, body mass index, chest-midarm-midthigh-abdominal circumference, chest expansion, handgrip power, foot pressure with 3.90%, 4.04%, 1.57%, 3.45%, 2.20%, 1.84%, 19.10%, 15.37%, 6.75% improvement in Group A and 3.81%, 3.18%, 0.50%, 3.34%, 1.93%, 1.28%, 13.77%, 8.73%, 5.98% improvement in Group B; significant decrease in walking time with 11.17% reduction in Group A and 8.71% reduction in Group B. Conclusion: Drugs D and I showed improvement in most parameters, former being slightly more efficacious. (Drug D/D1: Fresh flower juice concentrated by direct heat, Drug I/D2: Fresh flower juice concentrated by indirect heat).
