Monotherapeutic cefotetan surgical prophylaxis: Current evidence and practice for orthopaedic surgeons

Abstract

Introduction: This manuscript details the biochemistry and indications of the antibiotic cefotetan. Although formulations of the antibiotic have been available for decades, there is a striking paucity of representative literature in the realm of orthopaedic surgery. Objective: This review aims to provide the most recent literature on cefotetan while also describing a novel indication for orthopaedic surgeons as monotherapeutic antibiotic prophylaxis in Gustilo-Anderson Grade III open fractures. Conclusion: This brief communication offers the latest literature regarding cefotetan antibiotic prophylaxis, while describing the practical implications for orthopaedic surgeons.
