This work aims to show how Baz Luhrmans movie utilizes Galens theory of the humors and the four elements of Greek tradition (water, fire, earth and air). Although these elements are not explicit in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, the theory of the humors was largely known in Elizabethan England, as can be exemplified with Ben Johnsons Every Man is His Humor, or the parodic use Shakespeare makes of it in Henry V.
