The axonometric model of Peter Eisenman: mannerist experience or representational strategy?
Abstract
In the 1970s, during the design stage of his first houses, Peter Eisenman developed a parallel investigation into the potential of the model in three-dimensional architectural representation that culminated in the construction of an axonometric model. The new three-dimensional object, which unified the abstraction of axonometry and the materiality of the model, arising from its merely figurative condition, was turned into a representation that, as if a trompe l'oeil, imposed certain perspectives, from which, the perception of the design generated different interpretations. The construction of the axonometric model was more than an isolated mannerist experience, because it implied the confirmation of a representational strategy based on artifice and ambiguity, which can be generalized through photography.
