THE TRANSLATION OF LITERARY TEXTS AND ITS SUBTITLES

Abstract

The translations of idioms and stereotype expressions are difficult because they originate directly from the culture and everyday life of the society in which they arise. If the translation is not adequate enough, there may be discrepancies between the meaning of the source text and the target text. The aim of this work is to illustrate whether the artistic style of the author, Günter Grass, are present in the Turkish translation, made by Oğuz Tarihmen. The original book “Cat and Mouse” is compared with the Turkish translation, and if there are discrepancies, alternative translation possibilities are mentioned. The translation problems are mainly due to cultural differences. The translator must, above all, try to comprehend the world of foreign cultures and formulate a target text, following an interactive process and target-specific patterns. Translating must be understood as an event that requires extensive knowledge of basic text and target text culture.
