Purpose: the current study aimed to develop criteria and evaluate engine optimization in order to improve the awareness and knowledge of librarians and information science professionals in the field of representing information resources on websites. Methodology: This research is an applied study which has been done by survey-descriptive method with webometric technique and direct observation method. An author’s constructed checklist was confirmed by subject experts by which 30 search engine optimization tools have been evaluated. Findings: the "checkup.tools" tool which evaluated 7 criteria and 41 indicators, ranked first with a score of 100. the tools "hostiran" is in the second place that evaluated 6 criteria and 33 indicators. Identified items to check for search engines include On-page optimization, off-page optimization, website analysis, website ranking, website specifications and technology, website access by search engines, and website security, respectively. Criteria and indicators for evaluating web page optimization tools for search engines include 7 main items and 106 indicators. These items are extracted from the literature review related to the present study. Conclusion: Most of the tools have evaluated the criteria of On-page optimization, off-page optimization and website analysis, but a few of them examine the criteria of website access and website security. By introducing and comparing tools, this paper can provide a theoretical and basic framework for software specialists and researchers, programmers, as well as information retrieval experts. Finally, the checklist which is used in this article as a tool to evaluate the optimization of web pages for search engines is recommended for the design and evaluation of web pages of libraries.
