The Significance of the Deities Touching the King's Elbow in Ancient Egypt
Abstract
This research investigates the scenes in which the deities touch the King’s elbow with one hand and embrace him with the other hand on the walls of temples, chapels and cemeteries alike, since its beginning in the period of King Sneferu, the head of the fourth dynasty, until the end of the New Kingdom where the significance after this historical period has the same details and connotations. The aim of this research is to study these scenes and their details to know their function and significance. It is clear that the depiction of the King with the deity expresses a religious ritual, so the moment where the King meets the deity in these scenes expresses the idea of the King’s son-ship of the deity. Thus, in this capacity, the king rules on behalf of the deity, and thus this ritual carries much significance, especially when it is related to kingship. It grants and consolidates its authority to rulers, specifically in the scenes of the temple. As for depicting these scenes on the tombs, it bears the connotations of rebirth and resurrection of the deceased King and his rebirth by depicting the deceased King with the gods and goddesses of the cemetery, motherhood and the other world, so that the deceased king may be born again in the other world. يقوم الباحث في هذا البحث بدراسة المناظر التي تلامس فيها المعبودات مرفق (كوع) الملك بيد وتحتضنه باليد الأخرى؛ وذلك على جدران المعابد والمقاصير والمقابر على حد سواء؛ وذلك منذ بدايتها في عصر الملك سنفرو رأس ملوك الأسرة الرابعة حتى نهاية الدولة الحديثة، حيث إن هذه المناظر بعد هذه الفترة التاريخية تحمل نفس التفاصيل والدلالات. ويهدف هذا البحث إلي دراسة هذه المناظر وتفاصيلها لمعرفة وظيفتها ومغزاها. ومن الواضح أن منظر ملامسة المعبود لمرفق الملك يعبر عن طقس ديني، فعند التقاء الملك بالمعبود في هذه المناظر تتضح لنا فكرة بنوة الملك للمعبود، وهو بذلك يحكم الملك نيابة عن المعبود، وبذلك يحمل هذا الطقس الكثير من الدلالات وخاصة تلك التي ترتبط بالملكية ومنحها وتعضيد سلطتها للملوك وخاصة في مناظر المعبد، أما تصوير هذه المناظر في المقابر فيدل علي إعادة ميلاد الملك المتوفى وبعثه؛ وذلك من خلال تصويره مع أرباب وربات الجبانة والأمومة والعالم الأخر.
