Les timbres sur amphores africaines d’Arles : une approche archéométrique

Abstract

This paper presents a corpus of stamps on African amphorae recovered at Arles. Of the 22 examples, half were previously unpublished. Thin section analysis allows the authors to characterise the fabrics, identify production zones or workshops and to suggest the existence of workshops yet to be discovered on the ground. Therefore, this pluri-disciplinary approach, combining typological, epigraphic and archaeometric data, contributes to the reconstruction of the geography of the production of African amphora production.
