Mental soft tissue myxoma: Report of a case and literature review

Abstract

[Objective:] To describe the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment methods of soft tissue myxoma in oral and maxillofacial region, in order to improve the clinician's understanding of the disease. [Methods:] The clinical data of 56 patients with soft tissue myxoma in oral and maxillofacial region (including a 31‐year‐old female reported in this paper) were reviewed and analyzed. [Results:] A total of 56 patients with soft tissue myxoma in oral and maxillofacial region were included. The male to female ratio was 1.43∶1 and the average age was (37.8 ± 23.9) years. The follow‐up was unknown in 9 patients and the median follow‐up for the remaining 47 patients was 36(12-60) months. The recurrence rate was 10.6%-14.9%, and the recurrence rates at 2 years and 4 years after surgery were 4.3% and 8.5%, respectively. The recurrence was significantly associated with the number of lesions and treatment methods. [Conclusion:] Soft tissue myxoma in oral and maxillofacial region is a rare benign tumor that can easily be misdiagnosed and has a high recurrence rate. It is suggested to select an appropriate surgical method according to the location of the tumors and the patient's needs. An ideal outcome is usually achieved by tumor resection with close follow‐up for more than 4 years.
