Critical Synthesis Package: Cross-Cultural Counseling Inventory – Revised (CCCI-R)
Abstract
Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and the application to health science education of the Cross-Cultural Counseling Inventory—Revised (CCCI-R), and (2) a copy of the CCCI-R and scoring instructions developed by Teresa LaFromboise, PhD. The CCCI-R is a brief 20-item measure designed to assess cross-cultural counseling competencies outlined by Division 17 of the APA in 1982. Initially developed as an observer rating form, it has been modified to be used as a counselor self-report measure and a client rating form and has been widely used in multicultural counseling research. Although the CCCI-R was designed to have three subscales, it is generally scored unidimensionally, and higher scores indicate greater cross-cultural counseling competency. As a self-report measure, the CCCI-R scores appear to overlap with other multicultural counseling competency self-rating scales, and they also appear to be impacted by social desirability. As a client measure, CCCI-R scores are often related to more general client/counselor relationship factors. Furthermore, it appears that the CCCI-R represents different constructs when completed by counselors as opposed to clients. To this point, only one study in health education research has utilized the CCCI-R, and in this instance it was used as a guide for developing items for a more specific survey. The CCCI-R holds promise in health education research in this capacity, but could also be used in its original format by changing the language to reflect health care terminology (e.g., “provider” and “patient” instead of “counselor” and “client”) as a measure of provider cross-cultural competence.
