The morphological characteristics of the Japanese whiptail, Pentapodus nagasakiensis are described firstly in detail based on a single young specimen (58.0 mm in SL) collected from off Seogwipo, Jejudo Island, Korea. The species is characterized by having a forked caudal fin without filamentous rays, a naked lower limb of preopercle, and a pearly-white stripe on the mid-lateral body when fresh. This study represents the first reliable record of P. nagasakiensis in the Korean waters.
