This book is part of the ‘Making Europe: Technology and Transformations 1850-2000’ Series, launched by the Foundation for the History of Technology at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. Thus it is not surprising that in all the books of the series, including this one, technology is seen as a major force for change in the world in general and for the progress of European integration in particular.
