The complexity of interpersonal and institutional relations in a mono-lingual context is further increased by the presence of interlocutors speaking different languages. Such instances require the intervention of professionals who make the interaction possible. The present paper starts with a brief critical overview of the definitions and professional settings of the linguistic and cultural mediator (LCM). This will be followed by the description of the LCM’s linguistic and social profile emerging from a recent survey carried out by the Emilia Romagna Region involving 849 mediators and 37 LCM’s employers working in the region. Italy’s new social environment renders the LCM a co-protagonist in actions aimed at favouring integration and multiculturalism, but if on the one hand this prospect enhances his/her role and functions, on the other hand there are still many educational, occupational, institutional and economic hurdles which hamper his/her full recognition and professional growth.
