Cross-linked cellulose acetate aminosilane (CAAS) for aqueous arsenic (V) adsorption
Abstract
We synthesized a new cross-linked polymer cellulose acetate aminosilane (CAAS), from acetylated microcrystalline cellulose and 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS), where the acetyl group likely promotes the formation of polymer structure that facilitates the diffusion of aqueous ions during their adsorptions. CAAS adsorbed considerable amount of arsenate in various pH (2-10), suggesting that the presence of both amine and acetyl groups widen the pH range of the adsorption. The adsorption reached 455 mg g−1, which is a remarkable capacity among the aminosilane-modified cellulose polymers. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetics were fitted very well (R2 = 0.99 for both analyses) to the experimental data. The adsorption capacity of CAAS was largely recovered by a simple treatment with dilute sodium hydroxide solution (0.1M).
