This article shows, on the one hand, the existence of plural professional identities (place granted to professional activity, definition of the role of the engineer, characteristics of the engineer profession). It shows, on the other hand, that objective variables – linked to sociodemographic characteristics, to the curriculum followed or to the functions occupied in the working sphere – explain neither the plurality of professional identities nor their formation. However, subjective variables – defining a system of adhesion to individual values related to the private sphere (family, leisure…) and to the social sphere (politics, religion…) – appear to explain more clearly the expression and the formation of professional identities. In a more and more individualised society, personal values contribute to shaping professional identities.
