Schooling in the northern Province Parahyba: the organization of primary public education (1840-1860)
Abstract
We seek to enlighten the first years ofNorth Parahybaprovince institutionalization process of public school and this movement relation with the provincial government’s for the creation of classes of first letters. From the analysis of primary sources such as province presidents reports and documents separated from the instruction and using the concept of experience E.P. Thompson we collate the ideas linked to those documents with the text of two regulations approved in 1849. We conclude that such legislation contributed to the public primary instruction establishment as well as the discourse showed the concern with the school dissemination, especially considering the student’s families and teachers as the targets of the regulatory and civilizing action of the provincial government.
