Doi: 10.5902/2179769210989 Aim: to know in the perspective of rural family, the experience of illness of one of its members by cancer. Method: field study, descriptive with a qualitative approach. Participants were 12 rural families. Was used semistructured interview for the data collection. Data analysis was developed through thematic contentanalysis. Results: the cancer causes suffering and changes in the lives of families. In the rural context, this suffering is enhanced due to the family financial constraints, geographical distances of specialized health services and lack of information. Conclusion: regard the context of the practice of care of families, values and habits of life and observing the difficulties is essential in nursing practice, in order to look for consistency between the care process and the reality of families.
