Abstract

The author explores the issue of pain and suffering in the thought of C. S. Lewis and in the Orthodox patristic tradition. The central question of paper is whether Lewis was close to patristic tradition of the East regarding the problem of theodicy. Reviewing some characteristic patristic writings and Lewis’s work The Problem of Pain, the author comparatively analyses this question, while also pointing at the ever-important problem of atheism that primarily comes not out of the issue of God’s existence, but out of the issue of God’s justice.
