Solid state organic electrolytes offer the advantages of low flammability, superior thermal stability and straightforward production with the ability to form a stable solid-electrolytes interface layer. The ease of synthesis of these zwitterions and their high thermal stability made them desirable materials for their potential lithium ion battery applications. Here in, series of imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts with high thermal stability and simple synthetic approach were prepared. Sulfonate functionalized zwitterions with varying alkyl groups including n-butyl, sec-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl were synthesized based on benzimidazole and imidazole moieties and characterized. The six zwitterions synthesized exhibited high thermal stability (317-341 °C).
