A tolerância e sua medida em John Locke e Pierre Bayle

Abstract

The writings of John Locke and Pierre Bayle on toleration contributed decisively to the formation of philosophical discourse about that concept, which will be widely spread in the eighteenth century. Locke’s doctrine claims that the individual has certain rights, which are intrinsically related to their liberties and should be respected by the state. Bayle was also an advocate of tolerance, praising the liberty of conscience of the individual. However there are differences between these two thinkers: Locke proposes limits to tolerance, while Bayle is seen as a tolerant exaggerated. The aim is to investigate the main arguments used in defense of tolerance, and look at some differences between the two authors, especially the different measures of tolerance adopted by each one of them.
