This paper analyses a series of illustrations created by Roger Mello, a Brazilian illustrator of children’s and youth books, aiming to denote the nexus between them and popular, indigenous and Afro-Brazilian cultures. The analysis was developed by combining information from two sources. The first source were categories formulated by studies in the field of contemporaneous picture book. The second were visual references present in publications and collections specialized in tangible and intangible Brazilian heritage, such as visual arts, festivities, practices, and folk customs.
