This article aims to analyze the performance of Brazil's ambassador in Lisbon, Alvaro Lins, between the years 1956 and 1959, from the crisis triggered by the granting of asylum to the defeated candidate for President, General Humberto Delgado. We still have, as an essential element for the analysis of Luso-Brazilian relations in the period, the multifaceted personality of Alvaro Lins, its contradictions and dilemmas that challenged deeply by words and deeds, the policy of President Kubitschek, not only in Portugal relation, but also the manner in which the Foreign Ministry realized the international reality, and the strategies of insertion of Brazil in the new order established after World War II. Thus, Alvaro Lins contributed decisively to the debate that has put on the agenda of the major issues that would subsidize the construction of the Independent Foreign Policy of Presidents Quadros and Goulart.
