Can critical or material hermeneutics be applied to works that are not textual, but pictorial? This is what we try to anayse here for a painting of Rembrandt ("Aristotle"), showing both the methodological limitations of traditional hermeneutics and of the common phenomenology. The first fails to a sufficient "reduction" of the pictorial structure itself, the second neglects the historical datas of the debate in which the work takes his options.
