Over the last few years, the French State has made considerable efforts to preserve the country's religious heritage - its church architecture and church furnishings - and to promote better understanding of this heritage. As the UNESCO's 2003 convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage comes into force in France, the time seems to be ripe, in parallel with inventory and restoration work on liturgical and sacred objets, to set up oral history recording programs in order to safeguard the traditions of individual and collective religious practices, traditions without which the objects preserved will lose their meaning.
