The information presented here involves, on one hand, the voluntary colonization by north american immigrants arriving in Brazil during the second half of the 19th century, most of them m issionaries and southerners fleeing the civil war, who intended to disseminate their Presbyterian religious doctrine in our land. On the other hand, the text also deals w ith the silent colonization effected by north american industrial products, less than a century later, which, in fact, consolidated the doctrine of dependent industrial capitalism in Brazil, centered in São Paulo. The history of four manufacturers of hom e appliances installed in the country at that time is used to analyze the question of technological dependence as well as that of the north american "style" as an esthetic doctrine
